We were delighted to be able to showcase our premium Bianchetto Truffles in Tokyo, Japan, where a reception dinner was held at the NZ Embassy. This is the first time that truffles were traded between Japan and New Zealand to present the cuisine to Japanese chefs. The New Zealand Ambassador and Minister were very supportive of this project.
The menu was created by the NZ Ambassadors personal chef, Damian O’Rourke. It was a great event that was a direct showcase of Selwyn grown truffles, and it generated a lot of positive attention in a time when spirits were down due to COVID restrictions. The event was also a catalyst for some higher level political networking between NZ and Japan, which just shows how significant truffles are, and especially NZ grown truffles.
It was an amazing opportunity to introduce the truffles to all the chefs who were in attendance and discuss their needs for the seasons. This event was the catalyst for us to develop a market in Japan and build long-term commercial opportunities.

“Once again, thanks to the wonderful truffles, the tasting event was a great success.
We would like to express our gratitude for these precious truffles.
We started with a presentation of Fern Ridge Fresh and Selwyn area with a video showing the wonderful nature and fertile soil. The truffles were enjoyed by the guests with a wonderful meal prepared by the New Zealand Embassy Chef Mr. Damian. The tasting session was followed by a New Zealand sparkling wine with truffle in it and toast was held at the Embassy’s terrace.
All the dishes were infused with truffles perfectly and served with New Zealand honey, Kapiti Kikorangi, egg dishes, arancini, cutlets, crème brûlée and macaroons, etc. The food was not only enjoyed in the mouth, but also in the eyes, nose and all the atmosphere.
The quality of the truffles was excellent. The chefs from some of the best restaurants in Japan, celebrities, politicians, journalists and many others we invited enjoyed it very much. The flavours and tastes of the truffles were highly praised and people commented that it was a wonderful experience.
